Hilton Head is More Than a Golfer’s Paradise

Long known as a golfer’s paradise, Hilton Head Island offers visitors much more than tee times and remains one of the Southeast’s top island destinations.

Hilton Head Island is a beautiful vacation destination in South Carolina, complete with sandy beaches and a diverse choice of activities. The island is interlaced with an extensive network of trails so that you can easily explore it by bike or on foot.

The island of Hilton Head is not large – only twelve miles long and five miles wide – and it has no imposing hills to climb, so it is perfect for exploration by bike. There are sixty miles of bike lanes and more than two hundred miles of shared paths. About a quarter of the streets in the city have designated bike lanes or shoulders.

If you are looking for the best beaches of Hilton Head, look no further than Coligny Beach with a nearby shopping center, plenty of food options, clean bathrooms and showers, and of course wonderful sandy beaches. However, it can get a bid crowded in peak months, so be sure to check out some of the lesser known shorelines like Folly Field or Alder Lane.

After your beach time, make sure you check out the Coastal Discovery Museum. If you want a better understanding of Hilton Head’s cultural and ecological heritage, make time for a visit at the museum. Situated on the 68-acre Honey Horn property, the museum features trails, gardens, live oaks, a butterfly enclosure and Marsh Tacky horses, a rare breed native to South Carolina. It’s free to walk the grounds, but if you’d like to participate in one of the museum’s tours or programs, you’ll have to pay.

If you’re looking for other recreational activities during the visit, look into outdoor adventure companies such as Live Oac Outdoor Adventure Company, H20 Sports, and ZipLine Hilton Head. These companies specialize in thrilling but safe and family-friendly outdoor experiences. You and your friends and family can enjoy activities such as ziplining above the area forest canopy, go on dolphin tours, or charter fishing tours. You can also rent Jet Skis, kayaks, and sailboats or go parasailing, paddle boarding, tubing, and so much more.
